Oldham Training Centre was formed in 1966 as Oldham Engineering Group Training Association Limited and became a registered charity in 1970.
Originally set up to meet the needs of local engineering businesses, it provided first year, off-the-job training for engineering craft and technician apprentices.
Historically, it has provided quality training for young people who have participated in government funded youth training programmes.
In 1997, a Health & Safety and Environmental Support provision was introduced and has been very successful to such an extent that it has become a major part of the business. Warehousing & Distribution apprentices have grown in number and this area was responsible for gaining our first Grade 1 at an Adult Learning Inspectorate Inspection, now replaced by OFSTED. Business Administration has consistently provided good employees for employers. This has been enhanced with fully equipped IT training rooms providing additional qualifications.
Engineering is still the core part of OTC and it provides the City & Guilds technical certificates in house to compliment the practical training for which Oldham Training Centre has always been known. In a partnership approach with Oldham College and schools the Company also provides training for 14-16 year olds and has developed a dedicated room for this provision. This will be a feeder stream for future apprentices and subsequently skilled personnel for the industry.
In February 1997, it was decided that Oldham Engineering Group Training Association Limited would trade under the name ‘OTC’. The reasons for the change were simple but important. Firstly, the name Oldham Engineering Group Training Association Limited was too lengthy and cumbersome for modern day operation. Secondly, the services and training were no longer limited to engineering and services were being provided to a national customer base rather than just the Oldham area. The name OTC was seen as a generic name to represent a growing variety of services to a wider customer base.
OTC’s reputation has gone from strength to strength within the business community. It is an employer led Company with currently over 100 member companies and over 200 companies who regularly use its services.
Oldham Training Centre maintains its success by continually evaluating and adapting the services it offers to meet the ever changing needs of industry.
